50th birthday of Munnabhai's finest performances Gallery

Vaastav: Easily his best ever. No one expected this low budget gangster flick to work at the box office. But it did and how! Dutt's stagnating career got a new lease of life and he bagged all the awards that year. Dutt was perfect in his transformation from a wayward youngster to an underworld don. His breakdown in the climax is one of the most stirring scenes of all time.

Saajan: If you thought Sanjay Dutt couldn't romance watch Saajan! As the physically challenged, silent lover; Sanjay Duttshowcased a sensitivity that is yet to be seen in any of his other work.

Khalnayak: Sanjay Dutt has played the bad guy on screen a zillion times. But Subhash Ghai's Khal Nayak projected Dutt in a extremely mass appealing, larger than life fashion. Ironically released around the same time as his arrest, Khal Nayak was a historic hit. Dutt played the anti-hero with full enthusiasm, in an almost autobiographical way.

Haseena Maan Jaayegi: Few actors can hold their own against Govinda. Despite Govinda's flair for one liners and ability to improvise, never once did Dutt seem overpowered. Reacting to Govinda's jokes, Sanju took this David Dhawan comedy to another level.

Kaante: Right from Aatish to Zinda, Sanjay Gupta has had a certain way of presenting Dutt. While the films were low on content, Dutt's cool walk, fancy accessories and wicked one-liners were a huge hit with the masses. While Kaante was arguably their best and most spontaneous work - we just wish the duo reunites soon to give us a really stylised gangster flick.

Parineeta: Though he looked ten-years too old to romance Vidya Balan, Sanjay Dutt's easy screen presence was a highlight of this talk heavy film. While the Saif-Vidya chemistry got maximum attention, Dutt held the film together in its duller portions. Just watch him blush in Kaisi Yeh Paheli as he tries to match step with Rekha and Raima.

Naam: Bhatt has always extracted the best out of Dutt. In of his first grey characters, Sanjay played a disillusioned youngster who is driven to the wrong side of the law. Having just recovered from his drug addiction, Sanjay delivered a surprisingly mature performance – applauded by fans and critics alike.
Mission Kashmir: Perhaps his most underrated performance ever. One of his rare roles which had Dutt play a completely positive character, he got all the emotions right. As the top cop torn between his adopted son and duty Sanjay Dutt performed a range of emotions. Despite Hrithik Roshan's star power, Sanjay Dutt was the backbone of Mission Kashmir.

Munnabhai MBBS & Lage Raho Munnabhai: Undoubtedly this series is Sanjay Dutt's most popular act ever. The Munnabhai impact even had a significantly positive influence on his off screen image. Playing the bhai with a heart of gold Duut made the words Bole Toh a national craze. Surprisingly he lost out at the awards on both occasions. Better luck with Munnabhai 3.

On July 29, 2009 Bollywood's original bad-boy, Sanjay Dutt turns 50. In one of his busiest years where Sanju is expected to have as many as eight releases, we look back at some of his most powerful performances. More than two-decade-old in the industry, Sanjay Dutt remains one of the most popular stars in Bollywood.
