Lakhs of devotees and tourists thronged Puri to get a glimpse of the Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, during the annual Rath Yatra. The Rath Yatra marks the annual journey of the three deities from their abode to their aunt's house. Their wooden images or idols are mounted on ceremonial chariots and taken out in a procession, in which hundreds and thousands of devotees participate. Tragedy struck Puri on Tuesday as a woman was killed and 2 others injured during a stampede at one of the processions.
Scores of devotees wait to pull the three chariots in front of Lord Jagannath temple during the celebration of the "Rath yatra" (chariot journey of Jagannath) in the coastal city of Puri, some 65 kilometres from Bhubaneswar, on Tuesday. Tragedy struck the Rath Yatra in Puri on Tuesday when a woman was killed and three were injured in a stampede during pulling of the chariots.
