AP theatre owners finally blame Mega Fans

Theatre managements are angry at the state government for arresting some of the owners and closing down theatres after the deaths of the fans in stampedes.

The Andhra Pradesh Film Exhibitor’s association says it is inappropriate to shut down all the theatres in a district because one fan died in a mishap. According to them, it is the hyper enthusiasm of fans which kills them and theatre owners cannot be blamed for this.
Mr Vijandar Reddy, president of the exhibitors association and member of the film chamber, points out that deaths occurred at Bhavani theatre in Warangal and in a theatre in Vizianagaram district when fans stood on the shoulders of their friends and accidentally touched live wires.

“We do everything we can to prevent accidents,” he said. “We can’t help if fans are standing on their friends’ shoulders.”

Thousands of theatres in the state were built decades ago on the basis of norms prescribed in the Cinematography Act 1952. But the government came up with National Building Code in 1995 and now wants drastic changes to be made in the theatres.

Theatre managements have gone to the Andhra Pradesh High court seeking an exemption from the building code and the case is pending.
