Actor Kamal Hassan completes 50 years in Indian cinema this year. And to celebrate his golden jubilee, the Directorate of Film Festivals hosted a retrospective of some of his best known works. The festival, held at the Siri Fort auditorium in New Delhi on Friday, showcased hits like Nayakan Thevar Magan and Hey Ram.
In his five treasured decades in cinema, Kamal has won 28 best actor trophies including four National Awards. But the actor still continues to reinvent his craft. For him, the journey has just begun.
"This journey seems very short because I felt I had lot of time. I think I've been very lucky with my teachers or gurus. Literally, they've been my gurus; it's not about working under somebody hence calling him guru instead of your boss. They were gurus," says Kamal.
Kamal Hassan was felicitated by the Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni for his contribution to Indian cinema. The actor's repertoire is still unmatched. His godfather like performance in Mani Ratnam's Nayakan may have been voted by the Time magazine as among the 100 best films of all time, the actor feels Indian cinema has far more quality than the West gives it credit for.
"I am proud of my film industry and I think we should make the Time magazine, or the world at large, understand that we have quality. We've been delivering the films for local markets only, hence the quality remains that way," Kamal says.
Kamal is currently working on his latest project Madmadanam starring Madhavan and Trishna, he has the perfect answer when asked what's next. "I'll keep doing films, as I know nothing else," jokes the actor.
