All eyes on Telugu ammayi in Tollywood

In an industry that’s cluttered with starlets who are “imported” from all over India, a 20-something Telugu ammayi is making waves with her well-acclaimed debut in Sneha Geetham. Shreya Dhanwanthary, former Miss India finalist and an engineering graduate from National Institute of Technology, Warangal, is the latest local girl in the industry. The last Telugu heroine in Tollywood was Bindu Madhavi, who turned out to be a box office dud.

She may have made a promising start, but how does she plan to survive in an industry where a new face is launched with every movie? “I’m not worried. I would rather not act than be a part of bad cinema in an act of desperation. I hope that being a local girl works as an advantage for me. But at the end of the day, every director has his own vision for the character and it is important to fit into that. And if nothing else works, I always have my engineering degree to fall back on. It’s not the end of the world,” says Shreya, who feels that Telugu heroines don’t get their due because of lack of opportunities.

“I think our filmmakers need to accept Telugu girls for the way they are. They can’t just keep importing actors from the North to play Telugu girls in our films. A lot of local girls are independent and I think it is time our filmmakers tap into their potential. At the same time, these girls need to pay more attention to their looks, style and attitude so that they are not sidelined by our own film industry.”
