According to the present assessment, about 12 lakh cusecs of water is expected to reach Nagarjuna Sagar from Srisailam. The officials at the Sagar are getting ready to discharge over 8 lakh to 9 lakh cusecs to Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada, which would have to be discharged into the sea.
The expected 9 lakh cusecs of even more is set to maroon the villages causing heavy loss to the people. A few hundreds of thatched houses in the downstream of the river, deep into the Diviseema area, are likely to get washed away in the water. Similar situation is expected to happen in Vijayawada city, particularly in the residential areas along the river.
The officials have already evacuated the families from these low-lying areas during the last 24 hours. As the threat appears to be more dangerous with inflows expected to go high, the officials have also started evacuating people from more villages and more areas.
The Prakasam Barrage discharged 10.30 lakh cusecs of water in 1903, which is the highest in the history. Though the actual discharge of water from the Barrage is likely to be around 9 lakch cusescs to 10 lakh cusecs, the situation is going to be tough for the people.
The population and the number of villages in 1903 are different from what it is today and the devastation was much less despite the heavy discharge of water during that time. But, if the water is likely to be at the expected magnitude, the damage would be more now, which is the cause of worry for the people.
It is to be seen how the officials would handle the situation and how people are going to face the challenge.
