Friday was one such issue when the news about heavy inflows to the Srisailam Reservoir broke. The officials said they were preparing to discharge over 11 lakh cusecs of water from Srisailam which will have to pass through Nagarjuna Sagar and Prakasam Barrage before joining the Bay.
There were around 7 lakh cusecs of water in Sagar and 4 lakh cusecs in Prakasam Barrage. The channels have added this to the flood water expected to be discharged from Srisailam and started giving analysis and predictions on the impending threat.
One wonders what the officials from the irrigation department at Nagarjuna Sagar and Prakasam Barrage were doing, when they hear this calculation.
The officials have already started clearing the storage water from Sagar and Prakasam Barrage so as to accommodate and discharge the surplus water expected from Srisailam. The water from Srisailam would take more than 36 hours to reach Vijayawada by which time, the officials can discharge the water from Sagar and Barrage without much damage and danger.
But then, sensation is what is required for the news channels and they have their own ways to creating it. No one questions them and no one screens them. They go on their own.
The present situation is expected to cause evacuation of over a 1000 villages from Sagar to Diviseema in the down of river Krishna.
