Loss estimate unscientific: Chiranjeevi

Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) chief K Chiranjeevi today claimed the estimates submitted by Andhra Pradesh Government on flood loss in four districts were not at all 'scientific'.

Addressing the press here, he said the Rosaiah Government had put the loss at Rs 12,275 crore after unprecedented floods battered Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar Districts in the status report sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

However, even after the flood fury in two more districts--Krishna and Guntur-- the same figures werer given to Dr Singh when he came to the State to undertake an aerial survey.

Mr Chiranjeevi said he visited the flood-affected Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar Districts for six days and also in some areas in Vijayawada to know the problems of the people.

He claimed 20 kg rice and five litre kerosene promised by the government had not reached the people and demanded providing 50 kg rice and ten litre kerosene to flood victims for one or two months.

He also feared epidemic outbreak as the government had not taken up any sanitation measures in the flood-hit areas.

Mr Chiranjeevi said the party would vehemently oppose the State Government's reported move to vacate people from their dwellings constructed at flood banks.

Mr Chiranjeevi said the party had sent about 20 lorries containing rice and medicines among others to Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar Districts and 25 lorries carrying rice mostly will be distributed in the flood-hit areas.

Any surplus rice would be sent to Repalle in Guntur and Kurnool and Mahaboonagar Districts.

To a question, he said ''the reason for floods was ''human failure,'' as Irrigation Officials did not heed to warning given by the Central Water Commission (CWC) to release water stored in Srisailam Reservoir.
