All the Nagarjunasagar gates opened

Usually, the floods recede in October and the gates of major dams are closed to retain whatever water can be retained. But the situation is different this year with heavy rains in the Krishna catchment area coming towards the end of the monsoon season. All the crest gates of the Almatti, Narayanapur and Tungabhadra dams (Karnataka), and Jurala, Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar and Prakasam barrage were simultaneously opened on Thursday to release the surplus waters downstream.

For at least the next three days over 12 lakh cusecs (nearly 100 TMC ft) of water per day will be flowing into the Bay of Bengal until the floodwaters recede and the gates of the major dams, filled to their capacity, will be closed.

On Jurala, the first major dam on the Krishna in the state, 49 flood gates were lifted to release over seven lakh cusecs of waters into the Krishna river. Tungabhadra, which is also in spate, lifted all the 33 gates of the dam near Hospet in Karnataka and released 4 lakh cusecs of water downstream.

Srisailam, which has been full for the past 15 days, lifted 11 of its 12 huge crest gates to a height of 40 feet and released 11 lakh cusecs of water to the Nagarjunasagar dam.
