Congress wins the by-elections in local bodies

The ruling Congress continued its lead in the by-elections to various local bodies across the State, counting of which was taken up on Saturday.

The Congress had won in Vijayawada, Karimnagar, Hindupur, Kadiri, Parvathipuram, and Warangal, while the Telugu Desam had won the by-elections at Jaggaiahpet and Samalkot, leaving the lone Pithapuram to the Praja Rajyam Party.

The PRP had registered its first victory in the local body by-elections at Pithapuram on its new poll symbol – Sun. The PRP also gave a tough fight to the Congress in Vijayawada.

The Telugu Desam proved its strength at Jaggaiahpet, Mangalagiri and Samalkot much against the Congress wave.

In Vijayawada, the by-election to the 44th division was fought between the Congress and the PRP, pushing the Telugu Desam-Left combined to the third place. The TD-Left combine candidate also lost deposits in the run.

With the series of victories on its side the ruling Congress, now under the leadership of K Rosaiah, will have to maintain the same tempo for the elections to several municipalities and the Municipal Corporations due in 2010
