Tollywood Divas spin their magic

If you thought T-town’s divas were nothing more than glam props meant to add spice and colour to the storyline, think again.

Walking in the stilettoes of yesteryear divas Vijayashanti, Roja and Soundarya and taking inspiration from the recent success of Bhumika, Charmme and Anushka, now Genelia, Vimala Raman, Sindhu Menon, Sneha and Aarti are all set to give their male co-stars a run for their money

By the looks of it, top-of-the-line male stars are in for stiff competition — as these actresses take up meaty author-backed roles that are bound to overpower their male counterparts.

Genelia is calling the shots in her forthcoming untitled adventure film set in a forest. “The entire film revolves around Genelia,” says producer Gunnam Gangaraju, who proved that this trend can spin magic at the box-office with Charmme’s Anukokunda Oka Roju, few years ago.

Teen diva Vimala Raman of Evaraina Epudaina fame, who’s geared up to unveil a new avatar in her upcoming film says, “My new film’s about a young activist who fights against a burning social issue.” Coming up next are Sneha’s Bhavani IPS and Aarti Agarwal’s Neelaveni.

Summing up the trend, director V N Aditya says that this genre is here to stay. “A well-designed female-oriented film can spell big bucks. When we plan a female-centric film we don’t need to cater to whims of male stars. Filmmakers can focus on the story,” he reasons. He claims that Arundhati’s success has proved that female-centric movies can be made on lavish budgets and “have great potential at the box-office.”

As long as female-centric films turn out to be BO money-spinners, one can expect more and more Tollywood glam girls to join the bandwagon.
