Everything this maverick filmmaker does makes headlines. And Ram Gopal Varma is making news yet again for Agyaat, his latest thriller flick which has been courting controversy ever since its announcement. In the city to promote the Telugu version of the film Adavi, which features Tollywood actor Nitin and actress Priyanka Kothari in the lead, Ramu clears the air about the Censor Board hassles the film was stuck in.
“The Censor Board objected to a scene in the song Jai Shri Shambhu where Priyanka Kothari is seen puffing a chillum. We have edited the song now and it is currently on air,” he says.
Ask Ramu why everything he does is mired in controversy and he says, “It’s just a matter of difference in opinion. I take up very different subjects and themes for my movies, so they is bound to be a clash of opinions over it.”
With actor Nitin in the lead, Agyaat which is releasing as Adavi in AP, seems to be Ramu’s attempt to capture both markets at one go. “The film deals with the emotion of fear, which has a universal appeal. It’s the story of a film unit stuck in a forest, where the crew gets killed one by one. It is an adventure thriller. Moreover, the film does not involve any particular culture or tradition so it will be acceptable both in Bollywood and Tollywood,” says Ramu.
A Hyderabadi who has many hit Telugu films to his credit, Ramu confesses that though he would like to make more Telugu films, he can’t find the time for it. “I am busy with many Bollywood projects now, but in future I might make a Telugu film,” he adds.
Ramu’s strong connections with the city will be visible in his upcoming Hindi venture Rakta Charitra, a story based on the life of Paritala Ravi, which has Vivek Oberoi playing Ravi.
Apart from his professional life, a lot has been said about his fondness for his latest muse Priyanka a.k.a. Nisha Kothari, but the director brushes them off as mere rumours. “I am bored of these allegations now. It’s only in the last two years that I have worked with her and that too in just two movies. She is not acting in either Rakta Charitra or Rann. Every time I work with a new girl such rumours do the round,” he shrugs.
