The State Election Commission had cleared the line for the by-election to the Vemulavada and Sirisilla Assembly segments in Telangana districts. The two seats, along with 10 other Assembly seats fell vacant following the resignation of the MLAs in support of the Telangana demand. The EC had announced election schedule for 10 Assembly seats keeping these two seats in pending. The EC said that cases related to the 2009 elections were pending against these two seats in the High Court and hence the EC decided to defer the by-elections.
The TRS took exception to the EC decision and challenged it in the High Court. The TRS wanted the HC to direct the EC to hold election to these two seats along with the 10 other seats.
The HC, on hearing the case, directed the EC to conduct elections for the two seats. The EC would now hold elections to Vemulavada and Sirisilla. Meanwhile, the HC decision is being treated as first victory for the TRS in the by-elections. Having won the battle for two Assembly seats, it is to be seen whether the TRS would continue its winning sphere in the polling too!
