Chiranjeevi Rajyam not to contest in BYpoll

The Praja Rajyam has decided not to contest the by-elections to 10 Assembly constituencies in Telangana region, opposing the way the elections were forced upon the people. The party also opined that the byelections were not a referendum on the issue of Telangana.

The elections were necessitated neither for the welfare of the people nor for the region's development, but were imposed on the people by a party for its existence, a member of the PR's political affairs committee K. Vidyadhara Rao said, addressing a press conference here on Thursday. He alleged that the TRS was trying to cash in on the statehood issue by arousing the emotions of people.

Purposeless exercise

“It is not the first time that the TRS is forcing the elections. Except wasting public money they will not serve any purpose,” he said. Forcing elections repeatedly would not only amount to disrespecting the judgement of people, but it was also playing with the emotions of people, he observed.

Praja Rajyam was the only party to have a clear mandate on the issue of bifurcation of the State by opting for a united State, Mr Rao said and asserted that the party would definitely participate in the local body elections in all the regions.

He also accused the ruling Congress and Opposition TDP of political opportunism by not taking a firm stand on the issue but participating in the elections.

Chiru's appeal

Meanwhile, Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi has urged the State government to take immediate steps to improve medical facilities in the agency areas where scores of tribals, affected by severe ailments like dengue and malaria, were dying for want of proper medicare.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, Mr. Chiranjeevi wanted the government to declare ‘health emergency' in the agency areas to improve the conditions and save lives of tribals who were leading a miserable existence.

In addition to providing medical facilities, the government should supply 50 kg rice a month to each family to enable them recover from the ailments.

Mr. Chiranjeevi expressed concern that over 190 posts of doctors were vacant in tribal areas while there was absence of paramedical staff and mobile medical teams for providing timely treatment.
