Caste issues trouble Congress

The TRS has launched its campaign and declared its candidate for the ensuing Assembly byelection to the Warangal West seat. The internal bickering within the Congress continues to haunt the selection of candidate.Though there has been the talk that in all probability senior leader and candidate of the last time Mr Kondapalli Dayasagar Rao would be the choice of the APCC, some aspirants are still trying their best to put up all kinds of arguments. Some leaders belonging to Reddy community contend themselves as the rightful claimants of the seat, but fail to reason their claim.

Scheduled Caste voters outnumber any other community in the constituency, who account for over 50 per cent of voters followed by minorities who constitute nearly 20,000 voters. APCC campaign committee member and senior leader Mr. G.V.S. Srinivasa Chary pointed out that Reddy community constitutes six per cent of the State population but were given 100 seats by the party.

Is it not justified to ask for one seat by the Brahmin community where traditionally they have been winning. “Since 1952, election took place 10 times. Six times, Brahmins won here,” he said. Mr. Chary argued that if the Reddy's claim that they are more in number and hence should get the ticket, it should be Muslims or SCs who should claim on the account. “Brahmins are also more in number in this constituency numbering more than 6,000 voters,” he asserted.

Caste no issue

Ch Hari Prasad, a MBA student and Congress sympathiser opined that Warangal West Constituency was a purely urban, cosmopolitan and intellectual place where voters do not go by caste while voting unlike in rural areas. “Since it has been given to Brahmin community for more times, the tradition should continue,” he pointed out.
