The State government has estimated the loss caused by the floods at Rs 12,225 crore under various heads of which it had asked for Rs 6,000 crore for immediate relief and rehabilitation operations.
Chief Minister K Rosaiah had dashed a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, giving a first hand assessment of the damage. The government said the loss caused to cattle was around Rs 270 crore, while it was Rs 100 crore for fisheries and Rs 300 crore for houses. The loss for Agriculture was Rs 1,005 crore, while it was Rs 10,000 crore for roads, electricity and other amenities.
The government estimated over Rs 500 crore for the immediate relief and rehabilitation for the people, housed in various relief camps in the State.
The AICC chief and the UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, had directed the State government to make detailed assessment of the loss and ensure that every victim was reasonably rehabilitated. The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh too had assured all help to face the challenge but remained silent on the special request made by the State government for immediate release of Rs 6,000 crore.
It is to be seen how the Center would come to the rescue of the State in helping people come out of the crisis.
