The Film
Shankham is one of those run of the mill faction-feuds intervening in the romantic lead pair and told with rough humour, double entendre, blood and gory violence.
The Synopsis
Chandu (Gopichand), a trained martial arts expert, lives in Sydney in Australia along with his uncle (Chandramohan) who is searching for a suitable alliance for his nephew. Chandu meets Mahalakshmi (Trisha), whose uncle owns a restaurant, and falls in love with her.
When both Chandu and Mahalakshmi are strengthening their romantic relationship, she is taken back to Kadapa in India for solemnizing an arranged marriage.
Chandu lands in Kadapa and finds out that Mahalakshmi is the daughter of Pasupathi (Kota Sreenivasa Rao) who is a faction leader and at war with his rival Siviah (Satya Raj). Pasupathi motivates Chandu to destroy Pasupathi.
In a flash-back, we are told that Chandu is the son of Pasupathi and so he attacks Pasupathi to win back his lady love.
The Performances
Gopichand could not perform in the range of his earlier films like Lakshyam and Showryam because his character is not properly etched. Trisha is just a glamour doll without any scope for theatrics. Kota, Satya Raj and Chandra Mohan have done these roles many times over in earlier ilms and they just go through the motions. The comedians fail to impress. All others are just go about their roles with mechanical compulsion.
The Techniques
The story is told many times before and there are no dramatic elements to enthuse the audience. The characters and events are not bound by any logic or justification. The meandering narration only causes fatigue. There is too much violence and no relief in terms of humour or music. The songs are forgettable and the background music is inadequate. The cinematography is good with great visuals but the technical assets of the film fails to make any impact due to lack of a good story to tell.
The Verdict
Shankham is a below average film that seems to bank on only gory violence to redeem it. It is difficult to sit through the film without much of interesting entertainment values.
