Notices issued to cinema theatres

In the backdrop of the recent Salur theatre tragedy in which five people were killed in a stampede for tickets for the first show of Ram Charan Teja’s Magadheera, the Vizianagaram Joint Collector P. Lakshmi Narasimham on Tuesday has served show cause notices through tehsildars directing managements of various theatres in the district to rectify the problems as per the government guidelines within a week otherwise their licenses would be suspended temporarily.

The Collector told reporters that teams, comprising officials from R&B, Fire, Transco, Municipality, Public Health, Revenue and Police departments recently inspected 43 theatres in the district and found that many theatres violated norms.

The Salur tragedy occurred when a crowd standing in queue near a booking counter at Laxmi theatre in Salur jostled against each other, desperately trying to get tickets for the first show. Some enthusiastic ticket-seekers climbed the parapet wall of the booking counter to buy tickets. In the process, they lost control, caught an electric wire and fell on the crowd along with the live wire. After this, there was a stampede resulting in the tragedy and avoidable loss of lives.
