Naidu predicts mid-term polls

The Telugu Desam chief, N Chandrbabu Naidu, predicted mid-term polls both to the State Assembly and Lok Sabha, if the Congress fails to make Y S Jaganmohan Reddy as the next Chief Minister.

The Opposition parties are keenly watching the developments in the Congress. Keeping in view the growing support for Jagan as next CM, the parties like the Telugu Desam, BJP and the Left are gearing up for the mid-term polls.

Their calculation is that Jagan would split the party with over 125 MLAs supporting him. This will also lead to defection of over a dozen MPs from the State who are expected to take the side of Jagan. If this happens, there would be tough time for the Congress to save its government in Delhi.

The BJP in Delhi too is predicting possible mid-term poll at the Center due to the Jagan crisis. If Jagan is able to engineer defection of a little over dozen MPs, the Congress government will be in trouble. The smaller parties too will revolt against the Congress and thus a mid-term poll at the Center.

In the State if the 125 MLAs walk out with Jagan, the government will fall, forcing election to the Assembly.

Speculations of this nature will continue to dominate politics for the next two days and it is to be seen how the Congress high command would act to save its skin.
