A new concern which is more like a threat is slowly rising and this could well mark the end of a new era of producers. Apparently, there is news that the membership fees to be a part of the producers’ council is said to be hiked up to Rs 3 lakhs from the regular Rs 1 Lakh.
About five years back, the procedure was to register a banner name with the Film Chamber of commerce for a mere Rs 300 and they were given the option of registering a film title along with two more optional titles. The whole process along with application form and registration amounted upto Rs 700. But today, the entire scenario has changed and many say that is with a motive. Apparently, the big boys of the film industry are said to be hatching plans so that the small time movie makers are stopped from entering and that way their monopoly is maintained. Sources say that it is due to a fear that is among the big movie makers that their films are taking a hit due to the small time moviemakers and their projects. As per the new rules, any individual wishing to become a producer has to first pay Rs 1 lakh and once he receives the receipt, he is allowed to register his banner. This will cost him Rs 30000 (Rs 5000 – banner registration life membership, Rs 25000 – building fund). That way it costs upto Rs 1.35 lakhs.
Right now, a total of Rs 7 crores is said to be there in the funds of the chamber. As it is, coughing up Rs 1.35 lakhs has become a herculean task so if it is hiked to Rs 3 lakhs then it is doom. It is said that the decision is being made to stop those who are not knowledgeable and those who are connected with the Mafia from entering into the film circuit. But this version is not being bought as many say that experienced producers have once been freshers. If policies like movie agreements, location payments, how to sell a cinema, addresses of distributors etc are stored at a place then it would really help say film members. Even neighboring states like Tamilnadu and Kerala don’t have this policy of taking lakhs of rupees for membership. It is also said that the medical insurance is another factor why the small producers are not opening their mouth. And those who are opposing this hike are said to be suppressed giving the details of their benefits. The experts suggest that the theatre lease, rentals should be changed and earlier methods like distribution should be implemented to save the slumping industry.
Films that have got stuck must be given that push so that they get released. There should be a broad minded approach towards helping each other and this would ensure that the industry would bloom with profits and success.
